In general, growing cannabis from seed can offer the opportunity for growers to possibly create something new which can be exciting and different. Besides genetics, phenotypes based on the grow environment can create different alterations of the same cannabis strain (Conviron, 2017). An individual can easily purchase seeds online or by pollinating and hybridizing one’s own seeds for use. Cannabis growers may find more success by first floating or soaking their cannabis seeds in filtered water, than planting directly into a growing medium.
Within 24 hours these seeds had a success rate of 100% with all seeds showing tap roots and being placed into a different set of 8oz paper cups that were full of presoaked promix. The promix was only immediately presoaked using filtered water with
The germination of cannabis seeds depends on the right amount of heat and moisture (NGA, 2018). Since viable cannabis seeds float on the surface of the water, they are able to retain the proper ratio of moisture and air. Seeds that do not float may be sterile or underdeveloped. When you roll the seed in your hands prior to floating the seed, it should be firm and brown with the occasional dark stripes in appearance. Immature cannabis seeds appear green or sometimes white and as stated above they will sink to the bottom when you attempt to float them.
7pH. The cannabis seeds were placed with taproots sideways or with the seed hull standing upright and the taproot pointing downwards about ½ to 1” inch deep into the promix growing medium.
Some people use paper towels right after the water soaking method to get the remaining seeds to germinate. You can use paper towels from the start as well. The first step is to dampen the paper towel and put it on a plate. Place the seeds on it before folding the paper towel over.
Soaking cannabis seeds in water is more advantageous for the ones with a harder shell. Older seeds can benefit from the method as well. The water helps wake them up, in a sense. Another benefit is that it is not as costly. All you need is a clean glass cup and some distilled water.
Some cannabis growers use Rockwool cubes to germinate weed seeds. The method requires some setup before you can plant the seeds. Start by filling a bowl with some water. Use some pH-balancing chemicals to bring the water down to around 5.5. You may need a test kit to measure the levels.
There is more than one way to germinate weed seeds. Each one comes with its benefits and disadvantages for growers. Common methods are:
Place the seed inside the hole and cover it up. Then, you can add some water. The packaging should have instructions on how much water to add. The weed seeds can take anywhere from two to five days to finish germinating.
My favorite way to germinate the seeds is to put them in a cup of water and then between a damp paper towel. This goes well in 99% of the cases. How long does it take cannabis seeds to germinate in general? Or how do we germinate autoflowering seeds? The time depends on the strain or type of seed, but autoflowering seeds germinate in the same way and time as feminized or regular cannabis seeds. That is why I will more extensively describe this first way.
– On a damp surface
Germinating cannabis seeds in a cup of water
Maintain an ambient temperature of at least 20 °C, otherwise, the seeds will not or at least not optimally germinate. Use a clean room and area for the germination process. Fill a cup with water and put the cannabis seeds in it. After 3 to 5 days, the seeds should pop open and a tiny root should come out. As soon as the sprout is 2 to 3 mm, you can carefully get the seeds out of the water and plant them in the soil. Planting the germinated seed has to be done with lots of care and attention. Put them 0.5 to 1 cm in the soil with the root down. This way, the root (the white sprout) will more easily grow downwards.

Suzy’s Tip: Try your germintion method on a couple of seeds (maximum 3). This way, you can test if your method works well. Often a wrong germinating method is used and the seeds don’t germinate. Do you want to germinate your seeds in a different way? Continue reading.
