marijuana plant purchase

Dispensary staff should be able to give you information on the seeds they’re selling, but keep in mind that a lot of dispensaries focus on selling flower and end-products. It’s a good idea to call ahead and talk to staff to see if they are knowledgeable about seeds and can give you specific information on growing.

Marijuana seeds are considered a cannabis product just like flower, edibles, and concentrates. Their legality depends on which state you live in. People living in states with adult-use legalization can buy, produce, and sell seeds within their own state, but seeds can’t cross state lines. People living in states with medical marijuana legalization can only buy seeds if they have a medical card.

Which strain should I grow?

Feminized and autoflower seeds will cost more because more breeding work was put in to creating them and they take less time for the grower to get buds.

The first couple months of the year is a great time to start planning your cannabis garden to get a head start on the outdoor growing season, which roughly runs from March to November, depending on where you live.

Because US federal law still prohibits cannabis, it can be hard to find information on seed banks and breeders. Breeders who have a long history and positive reputation are usually a good place to start. To get an idea of what well-established breeders look like, check out:

Once you’ve figured out which seeds are right for you, you need to decide how many seeds to purchase. Regardless of the strain or type of seed, you should have an idea of how many plants you want to grow. It’s also a good idea to circle back to your area’s laws and check the number of plants you’re legally allowed to grow.

The difference between male and female seeds is important for growers. To get big harvests of smokable buds, you want only female plants. Male plants, on the other hand, can cause a lot of problems as they will pollinate the female flowers, which makes the buds produce seeds. While some people argue for the usefulness of male cannabis plants, most growers are primarily interested in big, seed-free flowers from female plants.

Growing indoor seeds gives you the ability to control and fine-tune the growing climate for your plants. You may feel more confident trying new seeds or difficult cultivars because you can adjust the environment as needed.

If you live in a state where it is legal to grow weed at home and there are not many restrictions on home cultivation, then you’ll likely be able to buy cannabis seeds directly from your favorite licensed dispensary. In some cases, you may also have the option of buying from a brick-and-mortar or online retailer.

Remember, seeds must be germinated before planting and there is no such thing as an iron-clad germination guarantee. Always plan on a certain percentage of seeds failing to germinate or growing into weak, unviable plants. So plan on purchasing more seeds than you think you will need. As a general guideline, assume that at least 25% of the seeds you plant will, for one reason or another, not make it to harvest. For best results, buy and plant 25% more seeds than the number of mature plants you want to produce.

There is a seemingly endless variety of cannabis strains now in existence. Before buying cannabis seeds you need to know what kind of weed you want to grow. Start by figuring out if you want to grow an indica-dominant, sativa-dominant, or hybrid strain. Indica-dominant plants tend to be short and bushy with thick stems and broad, deep-green leaves. They also have short flowering cycles and grow well in cold climates with short growing seasons. Sativa plants have longer flowering cycles, fare better in warm climates with long seasons, and usually grow taller with light-green, narrow leaves.

Which cannabis seeds should I buy?
It can be a bit bewildering, especially if you’re a first-time grower, to choose which types of seeds to buy. Indoor or outdoor, regular, feminized or auto-flowering, indica or sativa? A mixed pack or a single strain? High THC or CBD? A good piece of advice is to first look at where you might be cultivating them; if the answer is indoors, then checking factors such as height and flowering time may be your top priority. Outdoors, look for cannabis breeds specifically designed to withstand cold, wet summers, or finish maturing before the first cold nights of autumn, depending on your climate. Cannabis plants can grow in virtually any climate depending on their origins, from indicas that originated in high, windswept mountains to sativas hailing from equatorial regions. Even the generally inhospitable environment of northern Russia has given us valuable genetics in the form of cannabis ruderalis, which on its own is not that great as a producer of the best pot as it is low in THC and doesn’t yield much. However, when interbred, it imparts its unique autoflowering properties to the resulting offspring, and new strains are created that open up previously impossible opportunities for growers with time, space or energy restrictions. Simply put, we now have cannabis seed strains that can go from germination to being ready to harvest in as little as 80 days, even on a windowsill!
