Last on the consumer drone segment is the longest running DJI Drone, the DJI Phantom. DJI calls the Phantom series “Pro-Level Aerial Imaging.” Now on its fourth iteration, the Phantom 4 is available in 4 models – standard, advanced, Pro, Obsidian, andV2.0. All models sport the familiar Phantom design where the models start to differ is obstacle avoidance features, camera, and transmission system.
What is the difference between the Mavic Pro and Mavic Pro Platinum?. The Mavic Pro Platinum has a more efficient ESC (electronic speed control) board, giving it a slightly longer flight time over the Mavic Pro. Curious about how all the drone (UAV) components work together to keep the drone flying? Check out our anatomy of a drone infographic here. (LINK) The Platinum also has more efficient and quieter tapered propellers, these propellers do work on the Mavic Pro as well.
For DJI Spark, there is only one model (so far). Released May 24, 2017 the DJI Spark made headlines with its gesture controls, active track, palm launch, and its ultra-portable design. Flight time, however, can be constricted since ituses a 2970mAh battery – expect flight time is around 16 minutes, however real-life use is around 11 minutes. For its small and compact size the image , quality is superb, with 12MP stills and 1080P video.
The brand has also diversified their products tapping into different target consumers, whether it be weather sealed drones, camera stabilizers, or drone goggles. .
DJI Zenmuse H20T
With more than 70% in sales 2017, what makes DJI the best drone brand in the market today? They were the first brand to package a consumer ready, easy to fly drone with outstanding image and transmission capabilities. Since then they’ve built a drone empire with a strong and loyal community.
Not to be confused, the DJI Mavic Air is actually pretty different from the Mavic Pro and Mavic Platinum, it is not the second iteration of the Mavic Pro – although they share the same name. One notable difference with the DJI Mavic Air is that it folds up to the same size as the DJI Spark or about the size of a smart phone. Although it has a small form factor it still produces crispy 3 axis gimbal stabilized 4K footage and has obstacle avoidance on the rear. Whereas the DJI Spark only has a 2 axis gimbal and shoots video in a max resolution of 1080p.This is contrasted by the DJI Mavic which does not have rear obstacle avoidance but does have a 30-minute flight time vs only a 21-minute flight time on the Mavic Air. Lastly, enterprise drones are engineered to be used as a tool for daily work. This means multiple payload configurations, universal ports for third party sensor integration, and weather sealing for work during all seasons. . Let’s say for search and rescue (SAR) , a standard setup would be a DJI Matrice 210 with a Zenmuse XT thermal camera and a DJI Zenmuse Z30 zoom camera.
The rules of the air vary from region to region—we’ve covered what to know for US and UK pilots. But, typically, if your drone weighs 8.8 ounces (250g) and up, you’ll need to register it in order to fly it outdoors legally—even over your own property.
The DJI Inspire 2 is aimed at professional cinematographers, news organizations, and independent filmmakers. And it’s priced as such—its $3,000 MSRP doesn’t include a camera. You have the option of adding a 1-inch sensor fixed-lens camera, a Micro Four Thirds interchangeable lens model, or a Super35mm cinema mount with its own proprietary lens system and support for 6K video capture.
DJI Air 2S
Sony has recently jumped into the market with its Airpeak S1. It’s set to ship this fall, but is positioned for cinema productions. It starts at $9,000 without a camera or gimbal.
Flyaways still happen, and there are horror stories on various web discussion forums. Of course, negative experiences are amplified in this context, simply because uneventful flights that don’t result in a crash or missing drone aren’t hot topics for discussion. Some manufacturers offer extended warranties that will replace a lost aircraft, but make sure to read the fine print before buying something like DJI Care Refresh—there are restrictions and fees to consider.
If you’re flying within the United States, you need to take heed of FAA guidelines—or be prepared to face potential fines or jail time. There are no-fly zones set by the FAA, so don’t take off if you’re near an airport without notifying the control tower first. And, even if you’re out in the middle of nowhere, don’t take your drone above 400 feet. Most are set to obey these regulations out of the box, but controlling a quadcopter is just like driving a car—even if you missed seeing that speed limit sign, you’re still liable to pay the ticket.
